Vocabulary

As students read more difficult fiction and nonfiction, they will encounter challenging and unfamiliar words. In order to maintain and improve comprehension, it’s critical that they expand their vocabulary. The best way for students to acquire new words is by doing a great deal of reading, for school and for pleasure. Students also need to develop strategies for dealing with the unknown words they come across in their reading.

During this program, students learn a simple procedure for figuring out the meaning of unfamiliar words they encounter. This procedure is an effective tool, both for building vocabulary and for increasing overall reading comprehension. Students also work through the Word Power vocabulary workbook, which teaches over 200 words that commonly appear on the SATs and ACTs. To help students learn and retain words, this workbook organizes words based on Latin and Greek roots and includes regular reinforcement and review.
