An Easy, Effective Way to Make Sure
Your Child is Ready for 4th Grade
Flexible schedules, weekly one-hour classes, and short structured assignments make it simple for your child to grow as a reader and student over the summer.
Here’s How It Works:

In this program, your child will have great experiences reading two outstanding children’s novels.
We’ve chosen these books because they are full of interesting characters and exciting storylines, and they’re written at the right level of challenge for kids heading into 4th grade.
“I cannot believe the progress my kids have made. They did not like to read chapter books and now they are grabbing books to read on their own.” – Andrea, Parent of a 4th Grader

Once a week, your child will attend an exciting live online class led by an expert reading teacher.
During every class, kids participate in engaging book discussions and learn valuable reading and writing skills. Your child will look forward to attending week after week.
“The online classes were great. They helped my daughter become interested in reading because she enjoyed the discussions with her peers.” – Tiffany, Parent of a 4th Grader

Between classes, your child will complete fun interactive lessons that build confidence and core fourth-grade reading, writing, and study skills. We carefully structure the entire program to be manageable in the busiest of schedules, even when school is in session.
“My daughter developed her comprehension and writing skills a lot. It’s reflected in her school grades. She’s more confident now.” – Maria, Parent of a 4th Grader

Throughout the program, your child will get individual attention. You can schedule one-on-one appointments with the teacher to ask questions or get extra help. You’ll also have access to our on-demand “Helpline” for more help, even with schoolwork.
“The teacher was exceptional! My son was an engaged, active participant in class and she was very responsive to his ideas and thoughts.” – Joanne, Parent of a 4th Grader

After the program, you’ll receive a progress report from your teacher on how your child is doing, plus what your child should focus on next to continue growing as a reader.
Your child will finish the program as a stronger reader and better writer with the skills to succeed in 4th grade.

Key Skills Your Child Will Build
and Why They’re Important

Comprehension
Comprehension – the ability to understand what you read – is the goal of reading. Thinking actively and deeply about texts is a critical part of reading in 4th grade. Students with good comprehension can visualize the setting of a book, identify with its characters and how they feel, and anticipate the plot. They’re able to talk about books with others in detail and express a point of view.
In our 4th grade program, your child will build comprehension by reading and discussing great books. This is a positive experience that makes reading more enjoyable. Students with strong comprehension are motivated to read more for pleasure, which also gives them a big advantage in school.

Fluency
Fluency is the ability to read smoothly and accurately, at a good pace. In 4th grade, reading material gets more difficult. 4th graders need to continue developing fluency to meet new challenges they face from longer, harder words, more complex sentences and paragraphs, and richer themes.
In our 4th grade program, your child will do lot of independent reading, which is a great way to build reading fluency and speed. Strong, fluent readers have better comprehension, which helps them enjoy reading more and get completely absorbed in books.

Writing
Writing well makes a big difference in what kids can achieve. In order to express ideas effectively, students need strong writing skills. Fourth-grade writers work on improving their word choice, sentence construction, and paragraph organization. They also begin learning how to revise their work.
In our program for 4th graders, your child will get lots of writing practice and constructive feedback and learn how to avoid common errors that can trip up young writers. When students are skilled at writing, they’re set up to succeed with any school subject.

Textbooks and Nonfiction
Reading textbooks and nonfiction requires a different set of skills and strategies than reading fiction. In 4th grade, emphasis shifts from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” information. To succeed, kids must make connections between ideas, follow a sequence of thought, and compare points of view in nonfiction from different subject areas, like science and social studies.
In our 4th grade program, your child will learn essential nonfiction skills, like identifying main ideas and supporting details and recognizing text structures. These skills help students comprehend and remember important information, which is critical for academic achievement.

Vocabulary
Having a rich, robust vocabulary is the key to strong reading comprehension. It’s also essential for academic success in all subjects, for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The most effective way for kids to build vocabulary is through a combination of vocabulary instruction and doing a lot of reading for pleasure.
In our 4th grade program, students expand their vocabulary through interactive online lessons that provide instruction and practice with new words. They also get a boost from reading in great books every week throughout the program.

Love of Reading
One of the most exciting parts of 4th grade is that kids develop the comprehension to enable them to fully experience the joy of being “lost in a good book”. They feel like they are inside the story, experiencing the adventures right along with the characters.
Once your child has this experience, he or she will want to have it again and again. This is how kids fall in love with reading and continue reading for pleasure throughout their lives. A love of reading will make your child more confident, motivated and successful, not just in 4th grade, but in middle school, high school and beyond.
