Help Your Middle Schooler Become a Stronger Reader and Better Writer

In this engaging 8-week program, your 6th grader will double reading speed, improve comprehension in fiction and nonfiction, strengthen writing skills, and expand his or her vocabulary. Your middle schooler’s love of reading and confidence will grow, providing lots of motivation to keep reading for enjoyment.

The Skills Your 6th Grader Needs to Learn and Why They’re Important

Reading too slowly interferes with concentration and comprehension. It is hard to follow what’s going on, almost like watching a movie in slow motion. By increasing their speed, 6th graders can focus better on reading and finish school assignments more quickly.

In our program for 6th graders, your child will learn effective techniques for improving reading rate and recall. Practicing these techniques gives middle schoolers the tools to manage their workload successfully while maintaining good comprehension.

Comprehension – the ability to understand what you read – is the goal of reading. Middle schoolers are expected to think critically about what they’re reading and make connections between what they read and their own lives. 6th graders with strong comprehension are able to follow plot, understand characters’ motivations, and explore the meaningful themes in a book.

In our 6th grade program, your son or daughter will build comprehension by reading and discussing great books. This is a positive experience that makes reading more enjoyable. Having good comprehension encourages students to read more for pleasure, which also gives them a big advantage in school.

Writing well makes a big difference in what middle schoolers can achieve. In order to express ideas effectively, students need strong writing skills. Sixth-grade writers work on improving their word choice, sentence construction, and paragraph organization. They also become more proficient at revising their writing.

In our program for 6th graders, your child will get lots of writing practice and constructive feedback and learn how to avoid common errors that can trip up young writers. When students are skilled at writing, they’re set up to succeed with any school subject.

Reading textbooks and nonfiction requires a different set of skills and strategies than reading fiction. Middle schoolers are expected to learn and remember information for all of their school subjects from denser and more complex nonfiction sources and textbooks. This presents 6th graders with plenty of new challenges.

In our 6th grade program, your child will learn essential nonfiction skills, including how to identify key concepts, recognize text structures, summarize information, and take good notes. These skills help students comprehend and recall important information, which is critical for academic achievement.

Knowing the meaning of words and how they are used is essential for students’ full understanding of what they read. 6th graders can build new vocabulary through frequent instruction and practice, and by reading for pleasure. Reading a lot in great books is a great way to pick up additional words.

In our 6th grade program, students expand their vocabulary during interactive online lessons and learn new words every week from the program books. This gives them a big vocabulary boost. A rich working vocabulary will help your child get the most out of everything he or she reads.

Each teacher possesses a personal love of reading that makes a big difference in the way students see their relationship to books. Your 6th grader will be inspired to participate fully and do his or her best in each class.
