About the Institute of Reading Development

56 Years. One Mission. Better Readers.

The Institute of Reading Development has been building skilled, enthusiastic readers since 1970. Over our 56 years, we've worked with more than 200 partners and served over 3 million families across the United States.

Our approach is different: we focus exclusively on reading. Not math, not science, not test prep. One subject, taught by expert reading teachers who are trained in a curriculum refined over five decades. We are exceedingly selective with our teachers, hiring fewer than 3% of applicants.

Every program — summer, monthly, tutoring — uses an integrated system that connects foundational skills like phonics and fluency with higher-level comprehension, vocabulary, and critical analysis — so skills reinforce each other instead of living in isolation. The result: progress you can see, often within the first two weeks.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

We offer several programs designed for different needs. Summer Reading Programs include a 4-Week Program ($199 Early Enrollment, $249 regular), an 8-Week Bundle ($398), and Reading Enrichment Camp ($199 Early Enrollment, $249 regular). During the school year, Monthly Reading Programs continue the same structured approach at $199/month (cancel anytime). For families wanting individual attention, we offer 1:1 Tutoring at $349/month. A $49 Reading Diagnostic helps determine the best path — and credits toward the first month of tutoring. We also offer a Free Reading Guide — a 22-page PDF that shows you what reading mastery looks like at every stage and where your child stands.
Our summer and school-year group programs serve children from Pre-K through 8th grade. When you enroll, you select your child's grade and we place them in a program designed specifically for that level — with age-appropriate books, pacing, and skills focus. Your child works with peers at the same developmental stage. For high school students (9th–12th), we offer 1:1 tutoring with a dedicated reading teacher.
All Institute of Reading Development programs are live online via Zoom. Your child joins a small group of 4-6 students (8-10 for camp) with an expert reading teacher. Sessions are 50 minutes — interactive, structured, and engaging. Every student reads, speaks, and participates every session. Between live classes, students practice 15 minutes a day in the Online Learning Center. This isn't passive screen time — it's real teaching, live.
Our programs are taught by expert reading teachers trained in a curriculum developed and refined over 56 years. We are exceedingly selective with our teachers, hiring fewer than 3% of applicants. Our teachers focus exclusively on reading instruction — not math, not science, not test prep. Your child's teacher knows reading deeply, and they'll know your child by name. They provide immediate, actionable feedback every session and adjust their approach in real time based on what your child needs.
Our free 22-page guide, Reading Skill Mastery by Stage, gives parents a clear framework for understanding where their child stands with reading. It covers all 5 stages of reading development, three mastery levels per stage, what to look for at home, and how to advocate for your child. There's no cost and no catch — we created it because informed parents make better decisions for their children. Get the free guide here.
For summer programs, you're protected by two policies. Before the program starts: 100% refund within 72 hours of purchase. After 72 hours, graduated refunds through April 30 (75%) and May (50%). After the program starts: Our "We'll Make It Right" commitment. If the teacher isn't a fit, we'll move your child to a different group. If the level is off, we'll reassess and adjust within a week. We don't do refunds after the program starts — because we don't give up on your child. We fix what isn't working.

The $49 Reading Diagnostic is non-refundable but credits toward the first month of 1:1 tutoring if your family enrolls. Monthly programs (reading programs and tutoring) can be cancelled anytime.
