The Institute of Reading Development was born from founder Paul Copperman’s deep belief in the transformative power of reading. As a child, Paul discovered the joy and insight that great books offer, and as an adult, he recognized reading as a key to understanding life’s deeper meaning. In 1970, with a vision to instill this love of reading in others, Paul launched the Institute with just himself as the sole teacher, guiding 300 students that first year. Over the last 54 years, the Institute has grown exponentially, reaching over three million students of all ages across the United States, from preschoolers to high schoolers, all united by one purpose: to develop strong reading skills and a lifelong passion for books.

Paul Copperman’s legacy continues to define the Institute today. His remarkable leadership blended intellect with heart, balancing data-driven approaches with a courageous commitment to what truly matters. From founding the Institute at just 23, to reshaping education with his bold ideas, Paul’s vision for meaningful and purposeful learning lives on.
