Children’s Book Week Posters

Children’s Book Week is an annual celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading. 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of Children’s Book Week, making it the longest-running national literacy initiative in the United States.  Between April 29 – May 5, 2019 Children’s Book Week events will be held at schools, libraries, bookstores, and other places where children connect with books.

Every year, a children’s literature icon designs an official poster celebrating and promoting Children’s Book Week.  Ten years ago, the former CEO of the Institute of Reading Development, Dave Soloway, began a passion project to collect as many original copies of these annual Children’s Book Week posters as possible.

Dave had long recognized that the stated goals of the Children’s Book Council, the organizers of Children’s Book Week, mirror the Institute’s own mission and beliefs about reading as a formative influence. So in 2009, he reached out to the Children’s Book Council, offering the Institute’s support and making a donation.  To show their appreciation, the Council sent Dave a set of many of the Children’s Book Week posters that they had on hand.  This gift served as the basis for an ongoing collection of posters.

With the help of Facilities Coordinator, Karen Mitchell, these posters have been lovingly collected, curated, and preserved. Many are now framed and showcased on the walls of our Novato office. “The feeling in the building changed when the posters went up,” Karen recalls, explaining how the posters brought life and inspiration to the office. “They remind me every day why we’re here doing what we’re doing.”
