Who Is This For?

Is This the Right Summer Reading Program for Your Child?

Each program combines live expert instruction with structured practice — designed for real progress in small, focused groups.

50-Minute Live Classes

Expert-led sessions with guided reading, skill-building, and real-time feedback — every week.

Max 6 Students

Small groups mean more attention, more participation, and faster progress for your child.

Expert Reading Teachers

We hire fewer than 3% of applicants. Your child works with an expert reading teacher, not a generalist.

Practice Between Sessions

Pre-K–5th: Interactive Online Learning Center — independent lessons your child does on their own. 6th–8th: Structured reading practice that reinforces each week's skills.

Personalized Reading Report

At the end of the program, your child's teacher delivers a detailed reading report — what they built, where they grew, and what comes next.

Flexible Schedule

Morning, afternoon, and evening sessions available. Choose the time that works for your family.

Our Approach

A Connected System That Actually Works

Every skill reinforces the next — so your child doesn't just practice in isolation. For elementary students, phonics, fluency, and comprehension work as a single loop: each session's decoding skill appears in the guided reading text, that text becomes the fluency passage, and the passage is assessed in comprehension checks. Every piece connects. For older students, the same principle applies across fiction, nonfiction, writing, and study skills — each area strengthens the others.

  • Skills that build on each other, not taught in silos
  • Immediate, actionable feedback every session
  • Expert teachers who adjust in real time
  • Structured practice between sessions
  • Progress visible within the first two weeks

Programs by Grade

Summer Reading Programs by Grade Level

Choose your child's grade to see what they'll work on. Every grade band has its own curriculum, skill focus, and expert teachers trained for that developmental stage.

Pre-K & Kindergarten

Reading Readiness Program

Your child will learn the building blocks of reading — letter sounds, sight words, and early comprehension — in a warm, fun-first environment with just 6 kids per group.

  • Letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make
  • Blending sounds and recognizing sight words to read words and sentences
  • Read-aloud sessions that support guided comprehension development
1st – 2nd Grade

Beginning Reading & Reading Skills Program

Your child will master decoding — from vowels and sight words to vowel teams and longer words — while building the fluency and comprehension that turn reading from effortful to enjoyable.

  • Long and short vowels, blending, and common sight words
  • Applying skills in decodable stories
  • Decoding longer words with vowel teams, prefixes, and suffixes
  • Fluent, expressive reading
  • Understanding characters, structure, and motivations
3rd – 5th Grade

Reading & Comprehension Skills Program

The critical transition: "learning to read" becomes "reading to learn." Your child builds advanced decoding, fluent reading across subjects, and the comprehension skills that power every class.

  • Multisyllabic decoding using prefixes, suffixes, and syllables
  • Fluent, purposeful reading across subjects
  • Identifying main ideas, details, and themes
  • Summarizing, monitoring, and analyzing text
  • Using context and word-solving strategies
6th – 8th Grade

Reading, Writing & Study Skills Program

Your middle schooler builds skills across four core areas — fiction, nonfiction, writing, and study skills — with the same curriculum rotating monthly during the school year.

  • Fiction reading — close reading, comprehension, vocabulary, character motivation, theme analysis, and literary techniques
  • Nonfiction & textbooks — tackling textbooks, articles, essays, and primary sources for main ideas and supporting details
  • Writing skills — from sentences to essays, paragraph coherence, multi-paragraph organization, and audience awareness
  • Study skills & test prep — time management, prioritization, memorization strategies, and academic independence
9th – 12th Grade
1:1 Tutoring Only

Advanced Reading, Writing & Study Skills Program

For high school students, we offer personalized 1:1 tutoring — college-ready skills across four core areas with a dedicated expert tutor matched to your student's needs.

  • Fiction reading — advanced comprehension, recall, vocabulary, character motivation, theme analysis, and literary techniques
  • Nonfiction & textbooks — textbooks, articles, essays, and primary sources with emphasis on synthesis and evaluation
  • Writing skills — multi-paragraph organization, argumentation, audience awareness, and purpose-driven writing
  • Study skills & test prep — time management, scheduling, memorization strategies, test preparation, and academic independence

The Cost of Waiting

2/3

Two-thirds of American students don't graduate reading at the level needed for college and career success. It's a fact.

Kids lose two months of reading progress every summer. By middle school, summer learning loss compounds into a two-year lag behind peers who kept reading.

The Opportunity in Front of You

This summer doesn't have to be a setback. Four weeks of expert instruction is enough to see real progress — and with the 8-Week Bundle, your child builds momentum that carries into the school year.

Students who read just 20 minutes a day read 1 million more words per year than non-readers. Our programs make that 20 minutes structured, supported, and fun.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Summer Reading Programs

Our summer reading programs serve children from Pre-K through 8th grade. Every program is designed for a specific grade band — your child works with age-appropriate books, pacing, and skills focus. When you enroll, you'll select your child's grade and we'll place them in the right group.
All Institute of Reading Development summer reading programs are live online via Zoom. Your child joins a small group of 4-6 students (8-10 for camp) with an expert reading teacher. Sessions are 50 minutes — interactive, structured, and engaging. Every student reads, speaks, and participates every session. This isn't passive screen time — it's real teaching, live.
Summer reading programs start at $199 (Early Enrollment, through April 15) for a 4-week program or reading camp. The 8-Week Bundle is $398, which saves $100 vs. purchasing two 4-week programs. After April 15, 4-week programs and camp are $249 each.

4-Week ($199 Early Enrollment / $249): One lesson per week for 4 weeks, plus daily practice. Great starting point to see if the program is right for your child.
8-Week Bundle ($398): Same structure, double the duration. Locks your schedule and teacher for the whole summer. Most families choose this.
Camp ($199 Early Enrollment / $249): Five consecutive days, three hours a day. An intensive one-week experience. Curriculum rotates weekly.
Our programs are taught by expert reading teachers trained in a curriculum developed and refined over 56 years. Our teachers focus exclusively on reading instruction — not math, not science, not test prep. We're extremely selective in who we hire (fewer than 3% of applicants are accepted). Your child's teacher knows reading deeply, and they'll know your child by name.
Each week, your child attends one 50-minute live online class with an expert teacher and a small group of peers. Between sessions, they practice 15 minutes a day. For Pre-K–5th graders, that's in our interactive Online Learning Center — independent, guided activities your child does on their own. For 6th–8th graders, structured reading practice that reinforces each week's skills. Either way: 5 days a week of reading instruction, 1 live class + 4 practice days.
Yes. The reading camp curriculum rotates weekly (A, B, C), so each week is a different experience with different books and activities. Families can enroll in multiple weeks as long as they don't repeat the same curriculum.
Absolutely. Strong readers benefit from deeper comprehension, critical thinking, and guided book discussions they won't get anywhere else. We serve Pre-K through 8th grade — including students who read well and want to go further. Our grade-level programs challenge advanced readers with richer texts and more sophisticated analytical skills.
You're protected by two policies. Before the program starts: 100% refund within 72 hours of purchase. After 72 hours, graduated refunds through April 30 (75%) and May (50%).

After the first lesson: Our "We'll Make It Right" commitment. If the teacher isn't a fit, we'll move your child to a different group by their next session. If the level is off, we'll reassess and adjust within a week. We don't do refunds after the program starts — because we don't give up on your child. We fix what isn't working.
The Institute of Reading Development focuses exclusively on reading — one subject, refined over 56 years, with expert teachers who do nothing else. An app can teach letter sounds and quiz vocabulary. What it can't do is lead a book discussion, notice your child guessing from context, or adjust in real time. A private tutor might be great — but you're rolling the dice on their training, approach, and materials. Our teachers use a proven, integrated curriculum that connects phonics, fluency, and comprehension into one system.
Summer reading loss — where kids lose about two months of reading progress over the break — is prevented by structured reading practice with expert guidance, not by telling kids to read more. The Institute of Reading Development's summer programs provide live instruction with expert teachers, daily practice between sessions, and a personalized reading report at the end of the program. Research shows that students who read 20 minutes a day read 1 million more words per year than non-readers — our programs build that habit with support.
Many families continue with our Monthly Reading Programs during the school year — $199/month, same structured approach, cancel anytime. It's the same routine your child built over the summer, just kept going. Most parents tell us the transition is seamless. We also offer 1-on-1 tutoring ($349/month) for families who want individual attention year-round. A $49 Reading Diagnostic can help determine if that's the right path — and the $49 credits toward the first month if your family enrolls.
We offer 1:1 tutoring with a dedicated expert reading teacher — same caliber of instructor, fully personalized to your child. It's available for all ages, including 9th–12th graders. If you're not sure whether your child needs group instruction or individual tutoring, our $49 Reading Diagnostic is a great starting point. A reading specialist will assess your child's skills and recommend the right path — and the $49 credits toward the first month if you enroll in tutoring. Learn more about 1:1 tutoring →
