Summer Reading

Journey of Self-Discovery: Summer Reading

Summer provides an ideal opportunity for children to explore new places, encounter new people, and discover new books. While the season offers abundant recreational activities—vacations, fireworks, camping, sports, and treats—parents often struggle to encourage reading during this break.

Reading researcher Timothy Shanahan notes that children sometimes find reading "difficult, boring, or lonely," making outdoor activities more appealing. However, he emphasizes that summer reading should not be abandoned, as independent reading offers benefits beyond academics.

Reading develops crucial social and emotional skills that classroom instruction cannot teach. Books expose children to diverse places, cultures, and perspectives, allowing them to empathize with characters and reflect on their own values and choices.

Early Elementary: Building Empathy

Young children can develop empathy through picture books when read aloud by adults. Research shows that illustrated stories, combined with conversations about plot, characters, and emotions, help children become emotionally invested in narratives. This experience motivates continued reading development.

Late Elementary: Establishing Reader Identity

Children in this age group often recognize summer reading's academic value but need motivation to begin. When parents facilitate reading—such as establishing dedicated reading time or visiting libraries—children develop stronger self-identification as "readers." This identification often persists into adulthood.

CEO Doug Evans experienced this trajectory, explaining that family encouragement toward reading revealed "more paths open to me than I first thought."

Middle and High School: Creative Escape

Teenagers benefit from reading as a stress-relieving activity that strengthens critical thinking and emotional resilience. Reading science fiction and fantasy—genres that explore alternative worlds—helps adolescents examine reality creatively and develop new perspectives on real-world challenges.
